Siena Heights University is proud to announce the hiring of the school’s first ever bowling coach.  The Saints have hired Charles Cain to lead the new men’s and women’s bowling programs.  Siena Heights announced that they were adding the programs in February, 2010, and will begin competing in the fall of 2010.

Cain joins the Saints with a vast bowling background and considerable knowledge.  Cain has been coaching bowling for seven years and is a USBC (United States Bowling Congress) Silver Level Certified Instructor.   Most recently, Cain coached the University of Michigan’s men’s bowling club team to their first intercollegiate team sectionals appearance in school history.

Cain is a member of the USBC Coaches’ Association, a member of the MDUSBC (United States Bowling Congress Metro Detroit Association) board member, a part of the MDUSBC youth committee, and one of the state youth delegates of the MDUSBC. 

Cain’s success in coaching has not been unique to his time with the University of Michigan.  In 2007, as the Head Coach at Woodland Lanes (Livonia, Michigan) he led the program to a Michigan state USBC team championship at the youth tournament.  In 2009, he saw a second place finish in double at the state youth tournament.  For his efforts, Cain was selected as the Metro Detroit Coach of the Year for the 2008-2009 season.

Cain comments, "I excited about becoming the first head coach of the men's and women's bowling programs at Siena Heights University. The Midwest, Michigan in particular, is a hotbed for high school bowling and I am looking forward to building these teams with student-athletes that will continue the strong academic and sports traditions that are the hallmarks of this great institution."

Cain will start his new duties with the Saints immediately.  He will tap into the vast amount of bowling offered in the state of Michigan where nearly 300 high schools have bowling teams.  While the NAIA does not currently offer bowling as a sponsored sport, almost 30 schools are expected to have bowling in the 2010-11 season.  WHAC members Davenport, Indiana Tech, and Northwest Ohio are currently developing their new bowling programs as well.  “We have attracted a coach who we believe can lead us in being a collegiate leader in bowling in the state of Michigan, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA),” Smith said.
