Wilkerson Strong in SHU Baseball Win over OSU-Lima
ADRIAN, Mich. -- Winning pitcher Nathan Wilkerson (Osseo, Mich./Hudson) took a no-hitter into the fifth as the Siena Heights baseball team defeated Ohio State-Lima, 6-3, to snap a three-game skid at the Siena Heights Baseball Field on Tuesday.
Wilkerson retired the first 14 batters he faced before allowing a walk and hit in the fifth inning. During the sixth, Wilkerson ran into trouble and was pulled in favor of reliever Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt), who pitched 3 1/3 scoreless frames for the save.
Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) batted 2-for-4 with a double while Todd Vandercook (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) went 2-for-3 for Siena Heights (15-11), which took a 5-0 lead through two innings.
Dennis Sharp (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) opened the game with a single and then Benschoter doubled before Lima pitcher Anthony Theaker balked in Sharp for SHU's first run. Benschoter scored when Cory Lehman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) reached base on an error. After that, Lehman stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland).
The Saints tacked on two more scores in the second. Josh White (Brooklyn, Mich./Columbia Central) got on base via error and Vandercook singled to start the inning. White eventually scored on a fielder's choice while Vandercook touched the plate on a Benschoter single.
Ohio State-Lima (0-13) pushed its three runs in during the sixth on RBI singles by David Spearman, Derrick Pease and Jordan Selhorst.
SHU scored its final run in the seventh. Vandercook reached base on an error, eventually scoring when Benschoter got on with an error.
In 5 2/3 innings of work, Wilkerson allowed three runs on five hits while finishing with one strikeout and two walks. Kret had three strikeouts and one walk without allowing a hit.
Theaker was the losing pitcher. Of the five runs scored against him, only one was earned. He also gave up six hits.
The Saints will be back in action on Wednesday with a non-conference matchup against Trine (Ind.) beginning at 4 p.m.
