Saints' Women's Soccer Eliminated From WHACs by Madonna
LIVONIA, Mich. -- A pair of first-half goals by Madonna sank the Siena Heights women's soccer team as the fifth-seeded Saints fell to the four-seed Crusaders, 2-0, in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal on Wednesday.
Ashley Parent put the hosts on top with a goal in the 23rd minute, getting assists from Jennifer Jurcak and Liliana Serratos. Amanda Ferrick added an insurance tally in the 29th minute for Madonna (11-8).
Siena Heights (10-6-2) outshot Madonna, 15-3, and held a 5-0 corner-kick advantage, but nine saves by Crusader goalkeeper Blaire Schmalenberg made nine saves on her way to a clean sheet.
Saint goalie Crystal Wilcoxen (New Hudson, Mich./Franklin Road Christian) stopped one shot at her end.
The Saint/Crusader matchup was the first of four WHAC Tournament quarterfinals. Top-seed Davenport (15-2), which is ranked 24th in the NAIA, will host eight-seed Marygrove (6-11-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
On Thursday, two-seed Indiana Tech (14-4) will host seven-seed Concordia (5-11-1) while sixth-seeded Aquinas (7-9-1) will visit three-seed Cornerstone (14-3). Both matches are set for 4 p.m. starts.
