Lemm's 19 Leads Men's Hoops to Home Victory over Marygrove

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Chris Lemm (Clintown Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) had 19 points, leading a quintet of Siena Heights scorers in double-figures, as the Saints' men's basketball team defeated Marygrove, 90-81, in a Maple City Classic contest on Friday night at the SHU Fieldhouse.

Zack Craig (Clayton, Mich./Morenci) added 14 points, Cecil Clark (Ferndale, Mich./Ferndale) and Andre Johnson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills) put in 12 points apiece and Paul Elliott Jr. (Taylor, Mich./Consortium Prep) contributed 11 points.

Clark also had six rebounds and three steals. Vince Schantz (Wyandotte, Mich./Allen Park Cabrini) also hauled down six rebounds while Nick Kosovich (Shelby Township, Mich./Romeo) made four assists.

The Saints (2-1) took control of the game with an 11-2 run in the second half, putting them up 56-47 with 12:03 remaining. Nick Packwood (Southgate, Mich./Inter-City Baptist) scored all seven of his points during the stretch, finishing it with a three-pointer.

SHU snagged its largest lead with 8:09 the clock. A basket by Johnson gave the hosts a 71-56 advantage.

The Mustangs (1-1) then responded with a 10-point run, led by Darryll Dixon's five point, and closed their deficit to 71-66.

Marygrove inched even closer until back-to-back free throws by Dixon cut SHU's lead to 74-71 with 3:32 to go.

Craig then stepped up for the Saints, putting in a layup and then hitting a trey to push the Siena Heights lead to 79-71. From that point, Marygrove cut its deficit to five points on three separate occasions, but could not come any closer.

Dixon led Marygrove with 29 points. Omar Thomas added 15 points and five steals while Chris Sinagoga contributed 12 points. Inside the paint, Vaughn Bobbitt finished with eight rebounds and three blocks.

In the tournament's other first-round game, Lourdes (Ohio) bested Point Park (Pa.), 73-71. John Willhite led the Gray Wolves with 15 points while Robbie Heatherington and Jimmy Taylor had 24 and 22 points, respectively, for the Pioneers.

The Maple City Classic will wrap up on Saturday with two games. Point Park and Marygrove will meet in the 2 p.m. consolation game before the Saints host Lourdes at 4 p.m.
