Siena Heights Places 32nd in Learfield Cup Standings
ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights athletic program placed 32nd in the 2011-12 NAIA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings -- the second-highest placement among Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference members.
The Saints finished with 346 1/4 points based on seven of their team's placements in the final national rankings. The SHU men's outdoor track and field team led the way with its 11th-place finish at NAIAs, earning 65 1/4 points for the school.
The women's outdoor track and field team claimed 55 points for the standings, followed by women's indoor track and field (54 1/2), men's outdoor track and field (51 1/2), baseball (50), men's cross country (45) and women's soccer (25).
National champions in each NAIA-sponsored sport are awarded 100 points. Azusa Pacific (Calif.) won its eighth consecutive Learfield Cup with 918 points while Shorter, Ga., followed in second with 856 and Embry-Riddle, Fla., was third with 771 1/2.
Among WHAC schools, Indiana Tech was the top point-getter, placing 22nd with 440 points.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports -- six women's and six men's.
