Mielcarek, Five-Run Third Lift SHU Baseball Over Trine
ANGOLA, Ind. -- A five-run third inning helped the Siena Heights baseball team earn a 6-2 non-conference victory over Trine (Ind.) on Tuesday.
Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) batted 2-for-3 with a home run and Josh White (Brooklyn, Mich./Columbia Central) contributed a 2-for-4 day in support of winning pitcher Travis Mielcarek (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic).
Mielcarek started on the hill and worked six innings. He gave up five hits and struck out two batters. The only run scored against Mielcarek was unearned.
Lollo singled, Chaz Poindexter (Ypsilanti, Mich./Milan) walked and Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) reached base on an error to set the stage for the Saints' big frame. Todd Vandercook (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton), Cory Lehman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) and White had RBI singles while Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln Consolidated) connected for an RBI double during the third as Siena Heights took a 5-0 lead.
Trine battled back with a run in its half of the third, getting an RBI single from Steve Cornett.
Lollo smashed his round-tripper in the eighth, extended the Saints' advantage to 6-1.
Tom Wilder had an RBI groundout during the Thunder eighth for the game's final run.
Riley Smith (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) and Nathan Wilkerson (Osseo, Mich./Hudson) combined for an inning of scoreless relief for SHU. Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) threw the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit while walking three.
Korbin Baird was the losing pitcher for Trine. He gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits while recording two strikeouts and two walks in three innings of work.
At the plate, Ethan Prebynski went 3-for-3 for the Thunder (10-10).
Siena Heights (16-16) will return to action with a four-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series at Lourdes (Ohio) with two games on Thursday and two on Saturday. Both doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
