Saints' Men Edged by Marygrove in OT

DETROIT, Mich. -- Nick Packwood (Southgate, Mich./Inter-City Baptist) scored 17 points and Vince Schantz (Wyandotte, Mich./Allen Park Cabrini) had a double-double, but the Siena Heights men's basketball team were edged by Marygrove in overtime, 84-80, on Monday night.

Schantz compiled 14 points and 16 rebounds while Chris Lemm (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) and Eric Cogan (Petersburg, Mich./Summerfield) scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. Cecil Clark (Ferndale, Mich./Ferndale) added seven rebounds for the Saints, who climbed back from a 15-point deficit to force the extra period.

Trailing 44-43 in the second half, SHU went on an 11-point run -- led by five points from Packwood -- and took a 52-44 lead with 13:41 remaining.

The Saints led until a Marcus Hopkins basket gave the Mustangs a 71-70 advantage with 2:07 left.

Lemm answered with a trey before Hopkins made a pair of free throws to tie the score at 73-all.

With 1:01 left, Clark gave SHU its final lead with two freebies. Hopkins hit a bucket with 43 seconds left and the contest went into overtime tied at 75-all.

Marygrove opened extra time with five straight points and led the rest of the way.

In the first half, the host Mustangs took command with an 11-point run and eventually held its largest lead at 31-15. The Saints closed the gap to 37-31 by halftime.

Hopkins and Darryll Dixon led all scorers, finishing with 27 points each for the Mustangs. Mike Jackson hauled down 14 rebounds, Kevin Dunaj grabbed 10 and Vaughn Bobbitt brought down eight.

The Saints (5-15, 2-6) will play their next game on Wednesday when they visit Michigan-Dearborn for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
