SHU Men's Hoops Struggles Late in Loss to Spring Arbor

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team dropped a 64-44 decision to Spring Arbor in non-conference play at the SHU Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

Chris Lemm (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) scored 12 points and Vince Schantz (Wyandotte, Mich./Allen Park Cabrini) hauled down seven rebounds, but the Saints were doomed by a late Spring Arbor run.

Andre Johnson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills), who had eight points for SHU, made a 3-pointer with 10:56, trimming a Siena Heights deficit to 40-39, before the visiting Cougars (5-1) closed out the game with a 24-5 stretch.

The Saints led by as many as six points at 23-17 before Spring Arbor battled back to take a 28-25 lead into intermission.

SHU held its last lead -- 33-32 -- with 15:36 left in the game. The Cougars then went on an 8-1 run, led by four points from Caleb Byers, to grab a 40-34 lead.

The hosts then answered with a 5-0 run, finishing with Johnson's 3, before Spring Arbor took control. During the late streak, Rob Hogans, Chris Bellamy and Matt Howe scored six points apiece for the Cougars.

Hogans finished with 20 points while Howe put in 17. Byers grabbed 10 rebounds and Matt Van Pelt made seven assists for Spring Arbor.

The Saints (3-2) will return to action on Saturday when they visit No. 13 Saint Francis (Ind.) for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
