SHU Men's Hoops Falls to #3 Davenport
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team held an early lead until No. 3 Davenport ran past the Saints for a 104-61 decision in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Tuesday.
Andre Johnson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills) finished with 21 points for SHU, which used an early 10-0 run for its largest lead.
After a game-opening 3-pointer by the Panthers' James Humphrey, Siena Heights struck back with 10 consecutive points.
Paul Elliott (Taylor, Mich./Consortium Prep) started and finished the rally with a 3-pointers while Cecil Clark (Ferndale, Mich./Ferndale) hit a trey and Chris Lemm (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) made a free throw, helping the Saints to a 10-3 advantage.
The hosts battled back with seven consecutive points, evening the contest at 10-all.
Johnson gave SHU its last lead, burying a 3-pointer with 10:50 left in the first half, as the visitors went up 24-22.
Damacious White quickly answered with a 3-ball of his own, putting the Panthers ahead.
Later in the first, Davenport went on a 22-2 run -- led by nine points from James Nelson -- and eventually took a 56-36 lead into intermission.
An early second-half Panther run widened the gap even more as Ford's seven points lead the hosts on a 13-2 streak, putting Davenport up 73-42 with 15:48 to go.
While Siena Heights shot 19 of 50 from the field (38.0 percent), the Panthers were 40 of 64 (62.5 percent), including 15 of 29 from 3-point land (51.7). Davenport also held a 39-23 advantage in rebounds.
Ford led the hosts with 26 points while White had 18 and Nelson put in 15. Also, Lonnie Fairfax had 12 points and seven assists, Sam Burton contributed 11 points and eight assists and Humphrey finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Saints (4-7, 1-2) will return to action on Saturday when they host WHAC opponent Madonna for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
