Packwood's Double-Double Fuels SHU Men's Hoops Win at UMD
DEARBORN, Mich. -- Nick Packwood (Southgate, Mich./Inter-City Baptist) achieved two career-highs, compiling a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds, to lead the Siena Heights men's basketball team over Michigan-Dearborn, 74-66, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.
Packwood had a career night, finishing 9 of 11 from the field including 5 of 6 from 3-point land.
Cecil Clark (Ferndale, Mich./Ferndale) added 20 points and Chris Lemm (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) put in 10 for the Saints, who once trailed by 10 points.
The Saints went on a late 8-2 run to take a 53-48 lead, but the Wolves answered back to forge the game's 11th tie score at 55-55.
Clark then untied the knot for good, scoring five straight points to put SHU ahead, 60-55, with 4:13 to go.
After that, Dearborn (1-20, 0-9) trimmed its deficit to two points on four separate occasions, but could not come any closer. During the final minute, the Saints shot 6 of 6 from the free throw line and 1 of 1 from the field to hold off the hosts.
Siena Heights (6-15, 3-6) erased an early 22-12 deficit with a 12-2 run, getting baskets from five different players, and eventually went into halftime with a 29-29 tie.
After Packwood led the Saints' early charge with 16 first-half points, Clark followed up with 18 in the second.
SHU shot .480 from the field (24 of 50), including a .619 performance in the second half (13 of 21). It also led the rebounding battle, 41-27.
Jamiel Strickland and Julius Porter scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Wolves. Doug Sharples added 11 points and 10 rebounds while Jeff Fick put in 11 points.
The Saints will play their next game on Saturday at WHAC opponent Concordia. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
