Early Madonna Run Sinks Saints' Men's Hoops
LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team fell to Madonna, 65-46, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night.
Rick Jones (Honor, Mich./Benzie Central) led the Saints with eight points while Nick Packwood (Southgate, Mich./Inter-City Baptist) grabbed 11 rebounds.
The host Crusaders opened the game with a 20-point run. During that time, Madonna was 8 of 10 from the field while SHU missed its first eight field-goal attempts.
Siena Heights finally got on the board with a free throw by Brooks Sutherland (Adrian, Mich./Adrian). Myke Hand (Monroe, Mich./Dundee) made the team's first field goal, nailing a three-pointer with 12:10 left in the first half.
During the second half, SHU closed its deficit to 49-34 after Sutherland hit a layup and free throw with 9:20 remaining. That was as close as the Saints would get.
Madonna (15-10, 9-4) was led by Bobby Naubert and Travis Schuba, who had 22 and 15 points, respectively.
The Saints (6-19, 3-10) will return to action on Saturday when they visit WHAC opponent Northwestern Ohio for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
