Lauren Crockett and Nikki Hughes lead Saints in huge comeback win against Doane College. The Saints Women’s Basketball Team beat Doane 78-74 after being down by double digits in the second half. The win puts the Saints in the fifth place game at the St. Xavier Holiday Tournament. Siena Heights will play Calumet College at 4 pm.
In what turned out to be a game of huge runs, the Saints saved the biggest and best run for the end of the game. After taking an early three point led to open the game, Siena Heights was down ten points (20-30) with just over six minutes left in the first half. The Saints then went on a 14-3 run and took a 34-33 lead with 2:19 left in the first half. However, Doane finished the last two minutes of the half on a 8-3 run and Siena Heights found themselves down 37-41 at the break.
The first half of the second half was not very friendly for the Saints either. The four point deficit went to a 11 point (55-66) deficit with seven and a half minutes left to play. Nikki Hughes then made a lay-up to give the Saints a two point lead with 2:38 left to play. At that point the Saints were on a 14-2 run. Siena Heights was not done there, they eventually got their led to six with 49 seconds left. Doane was only able to get back to within four points as Siena Heights wins 78-74. From the point at which the Saints were down eleven points, Siena Heights finished the game on a huge 23-8 run to win the game.
Lauren Crockett was a very big part of the victory with 20 points, nine assists, and four steals. Hughes, besides making the go ahead lay-up, provided the Saints with 18 points off of the bench. Tanci Levit led the Saints in rebounds with seven and she added a very respectable 13 points, while Shalaha Hubbard added a dozen points herself.
Once again, the Saints will play Calumet College at 4 pm est, tomorrow in the 5th place game.
