The Siena Heights Women's Basketball Team didn't make it easy on themselves, but found a way to come back from down 12 points and win their WHAC opener by a score of 66-61 over Madonna to remain unbeaten at home.
In the first half, the Saints shot a dismal 23.5% in the half (including a 0-12 clip from three point land) and started off the game shooting 0-16. Madonna came out and took it to the Saints in the first two minutes of the game, building a 8-0 lead before a free throw finally got the Saints on the board. The Saints stayed in the game thanks to a 8-10
mark from the free throw stripe in the first 7:30 of the game to trail by only four points early on. After trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half, the Saints scored five straight to end the first half and go into the break down 35-28.
In the second half, Madonna maintained their strong lead until a three pointer by Shalaha Hubbard brought the Saints to within five with 11:30 left in the game. The Saints went on a 7-0 to take their first lead with 5:45 left in the game when a three pointer by Erin Cassidy, then two Nikki Hughes free throws, followed by a fastbreak basket by
Hubbard off an assist from Lauren Crockett.
The Saints found themselves down by two with 2:41 left to play when a three point shot by Tanci Levit gave the Saints a lead they would never relinquish. Madonna pulled back to within a point, but would get no closer as the Saints ended up earning a hard fought five point win.
On the night, the Saints were led by Hubbard with 15 points followed by Levit with 11 points and Cassidy with 10 points. Cassidy earned a double-double with a 13 rebound effort. Crockett led the team with seven assists and two
steals.
With the win, the Saints move to 12-5 on the season and 1-0 in the WHAC. They will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Concordia. The Saints will not return home again until Wednesday, January 20th when they host Indiana Tech at 7:30 pm.
