The Siena Heights baseball team is set to open its 2017-18 season on Friday, Sept. 15 against non-conference opponent, Roosevelt (Ill.), followed by a double-header with the Lakers on Saturday, Sept. 16. The Saints start the season with hopes and expectations to make a run in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament this season.
Last season, Brendan Green led the Saints in multiple categories, including batting average (.340), doubles (14), total bases (66), games played (45), and on base percentage (.448). He also finished second on the team in RBI's with 20.
Jehle will also return to help the Saints after leading the squad last season with 41 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases. He also contributed a team second best in batting average with a .327 and total bases with 62.
Also returning for SHU, Wlad helped in the 2016-17 season by leading the team in triples and home runs, while adding a team second highest slugging percent (.440) and a third best, with 18 RBI's.
Olmstead will look to help the Saints on the mound this season after contributing 41 strikeouts last season (second on team) and a 5.60 ERA. Roth can also be found on the mound in 2017-18 after adding a 7.55 ERA and 21 strikeouts in the previous season.
Coach Kolasinski explains that pitching and defense are some of the Saints keys to success this season and will look to the leadership of Kevin Ketvirtis, Wlad, Green and Olmstead who he mentions as some of his leaders that are, "good players who work hard."
Kolasinski adds that we will see at least five players changing positions so the Saints' lineup could change weekly.
After the season opening series with Roosevelt, Siena Heights will kick-off WHAC action on Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 when they head to Livonia, Mich. to take on Madonna.
