SYLVANIA, Ohio -- The Siena Heights softball team won its first game at the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament before falling in its second contest at Pacesetter Park on Wednesday. The fourth-seeded Saints defeated five-seed Aquinas, 3-2, on a game-ending RBI single by Kenya Keller; SHU then fell to 22nd-ranked Davenport, 5-3, and fell to the losers' bracket.
Keller batted 2-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base in game one. During the seventh inning, she lined a one-out, bases-loaded single inside the right-field line to send Siena Heights into the next round.
Katie O'Hotzke also had a 2-for-3 game, finishing with two runs and a double. She also earned the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing two runs on six hits while compiling six strikeouts.
Taylor Hayes also went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
SHU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Keller and then extended the advantage to two runs in the third on a run-scoring double by Hayes.
Aquinas answered with a two-run fourth inning. Tori Lowe and Irma Cruz had RBI singles to tie the contest at 2-2.
Rebecca Shineldecker was the losing pitcher for Aquinas. She allowed three runs on nine hits while totaling two strikeouts, three walks and one hit batsman.
Against top-seeded Davenport, SHU fell behind 5-0 during the first two innings and fell short in its late comeback bid.
O'Hotzke had two RBI while Keller finished with a double and RBI. Jones also doubled.
KC Dunne and Paige Sant'Angelo helped the Panthers get on the board with RBI singles during DU's three-run first. Karli Myers blasted a two-run homer in the Davenport second.
Siena Heights struck for two runs in the fifth -- on a two-run single by O'Hotzke -- and then one in the sixth on an RBI double by Keller.
O'Hotzke was the losing pitcher, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits while finishing with three strikeouts and one walk in two innings of work. Hayes pitched five shutout innings in relief, totaling five strikeouts and one walk.
For Davenport, Myers went 3-for-4, Amber Getty scored two runs, and Sant'Angelo finished 2-for-3 with a double.
Emily Maves started in the circle for DU and worked two scoreless frames before Alyssa Eastman finished up the final five innings and earned the win. Eastman allowed three runs on four hits while finishing with six strikeouts and three walks.
The Saints are among the final six teams left in the WHAC Tournament. They are one of four squads with 1-1 records.
Aquinas and seven-seed Lourdes were eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday. Siena Heights, two-seed Madonna, six-seed Concordia and eight-seed Michigan-Dearborn have 1-1 records while Davenport and three-seed Cornerstone are 2-0.
The Saints will meet Concordia at 2 p.m. on Thursday in an elimination game. Madonna and Michigan-Dearborn are also set to meet in an elimination contest. DU and CU will face off at 4:30 p.m.
