TUCSON, Ariz. -- Kelsie Abbott's walkoff RBI single ended a marathon Friday for the Siena Heights softball team, which ended a 1-2 day on a high note -- an 8-7 extra-inning victory over Morningside (Iowa) -- at the Tucson Invitational Games. The Saints suffered losses to Eastern (Pa.), 8-6, and Presentation (S.D.), 11-3, on a day when they spent nearly 12 hours at the ballpark.
Abbott's ninth-inning single capped a six-run comeback for the Saints (6-4), who trailed 7-2 at one point. She was also the winning pitcher with four strikeouts and three walks. She gave up eight hits and, of the seven runs scored by Morningside, only two were earned.
Siena Heights opened the scoring with a two-run first as Boss scored on a wild pitch and Taylor Hayes delivered an RBI single to put SHU ahead, 2-0.
Morningside then tacked on four runs in the second and three in the fourth to take its 7-2 advantage.
The Saints responded with a five-run fourth, getting an RBI single from Abbott, a bases-clearing two-bagger by Hayes and a game-tying RBI double by Megan Jones.
Siena Heights opened the day with its loss to Eastern.
Jones went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Heisler added a double and two RBI while Abbott was 2-for-4 with a run.
The Saints took a 3-0 lead in the second on a Heisler two-run double and an RBI squeeze bunt by Hailey Fox.
Eastern then scored seven straight runs -- two in the third and five in the fourth -- before Jones pounded her round-tripper.
SHU closed its deficit to 7-6 in the fifth on RBI singles by Jones and Hannah Bleikamp, but that was as close as it would get.
Eastern scored an insurance run in the seventh.
Abbott was the losing pitcher. Stephanie Tylicki worked 3 1/3 relief innings without allowing an earned run.
Against Presentation, Hayes batted 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bleikamp also went 2-for-3. Tiffany Jones doubled.
Presentation scored twice in the first before the Saints answered on an RBI double by Hayes in the third.
Presentation went up, 3-1 in the third, but SHU then tied the contest at 3-all in the fourth -- once on an RBI fielder's choice by Boss and again on a Hayes RBI single.
Presentation then scored seven times in the fourth and once in the fifth to end the game.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday with games against Purdue North Central (Ind.) and Missouri Valley.
