Calhoun Records 22, Howrigon Sets Assists Record as #16 SHU Women Win WHAC Opener

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Sierra Calhoun scored 22 points and Grace Howrigon became the all-time assists queen in Siena Heights women's basketball history as the 16th-ranked Saints defeated Cornerstone, 59-47, in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener at the SHU Fieldhouse on Thursday.

Howrigon finished with five assists, giving her 384 in her career to move past Michele Lourim (383). Jennifer Jasinskiand Jessie Arnold added eight rebounds each to the SHU effort.

Siena Heights shot 38.0 percent from the field (19 of 50) while holding Cornerstone to a 26.5-percent performance (18 of 68).

Calhoun carried the Saints (2-0, 1-0) for the majority of their 19-4 first-half run. She put in 13 straight points for SHU, helping the hosts to a 30-16 lead.

The Golden Eagles (3-2, 0-1) eventually answered with an 18-5 stretch, getting contributions from six different scorers, to trim their deficit to 37-36.

From there, SHU responded with its second huge stretch of the game -- this time outscoring Cornerstone, 17-2 -- to put the contest out of reach. A total of six scorers had their hand in that Saints' run while Howrigon set the new assists mark on a 3-pointer by Morgan Warfield.

Cornerstone was led by Katelyn Cousins, who finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Jill Hendrickson added 10 points and six rebounds while Jill Steenwyk grabbed seven boards.

The Saints will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. WHAC contest at Aquinas.
