LIVONIA, Mich. -- Sierra Calhoun scored 19 points while Grace Howirgon and Jennifer Jasinski contributed double-doubles to the Siena Heights effort as the 19th-ranked Saints' women's basketball team earned an 83-70 win over Madonna in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday. With the win, SHU earned its 15th win in its last 16 games and secured its third consecutive 20-win season.
The Saints had an 46-30 lead at halftime and led by 18 on eight different occasions in the second half.
With 14:28 left in the contest, Madonna went on an 8-0 streak -- four points by Chelsea Williams and four by Rachel Melcher -- and closed its deficit to 50-40.
The Crusaders (11-14, 9-9) twice shrank the gap to seven points, but an eventual 9-0 SHU run, including two 3-pointers by Howrigon and three free throws by Knannlein, helped Siena Heights put the game out of Madonna's reach.
As a team, the Saints outrebounded their hosts, 56-30. They opened the game with a 17-for-33 field-goal performance in the first half (51.5 percent). On the game, SHU held Madonna to 19 of 66 (28.8 percent).
The Crusaders had three scorers in double-figures. Williams had 17 points, Melcher put in 16, and Carrie Kloser came through with 15 points and nine rebounds.
SHU will be in action again on Wednesday when it plays its regular-season home finale -- a 6 p.m. WHAC contest against Marygrove.
