ADRIAN, Mich. -- Mackenzie Tomasik had a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but the 11th-ranked Siena Heights women's basketball team was unable to hold off upset-minded Madonna and suffered a 63-56 defeat in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play at the SHU Fieldhouse on Wednesday.
Madonna's Justice Dean hit a 3-pointer with 3:59 remaining in the contest, helping the Crusaders (9-6, 8-1) take the lead and begin a six-point run to 58-52. MU then led the rest of the way.
SHU trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half before going into halftime down, 26-18.
In the second, the teams traded seven-point runs, which saw Siena Heights close its deficit to 29-27 before Madonna widened the gap to 36-27.
Later, each team enjoyed six-point runs before a 52-all tie set the stage for Dean's go-ahead basket.
Rachel Melcher led the visitors with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Lindsey Hernden added 17 points while Michele Hayes put in 13.
SHU held a 45-35 rebound advantage, but turnovers hurt the Saints. While Madonna committed eight TOs, Siena Heights had 16. As a team, the Saints shot 21 of 59 from the field (35.6 percent) and 4 of 20 from three-point land (20.0 percent).
The Saints will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. WHAC contest at Lourdes (Ohio).
