SHU Women's Volleyball Snags WHAC Opener

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Brianna Baker had 13 kills and six aces to lead the Siena Heights women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory against Michigan-Dearborn in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match on Wednesday at the SHU Fieldhouse.

Mycala Cherry added 10 kills, Carly Tillotson made 23 assists, and Nicole Morgan finished with 13 digs for the Saints (6-3, 1-0), who won by set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 25-11.

In the first set, SHU once trailed by two points. The set featured six tie scores before Siena Heights snapped a 14-14 knot with a stretch of 11-6. The hosts began and ended the stretch with three-point runs.

During the second, Siena Heights endured a set-opening four-point run by the Wolverines (4-9, 0-1) before battling back for five points of its own. Later, a six-point charge ended an 8-all tie and SHU led the rest of the way.

UMD led the majority of the third set before the Saints dominated the fourth. An early 5-0 run pushed the SHU advantage to 6-2. Siena Heights also had an eight-point run later in the set.

Michigan-Dearborn was led by Nia Martin, who finished with 12 kills, and Emily Tjapkes, who had 22 assists. Also, Rebecca Carley had 14 digs and Brittany Yanos smashed four aces.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 18, with a home WHAC contest against Davenport.
