Women's Volleyball's Upset Bid Falls Short at #9 Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. -- Leze Vukaj had 22 kills and 12 blocks as the Siena Heights women's volleyball team pushed ninth-ranked Madonna to the limit, but dropped a five-set thriller in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.

Rachel Cornish added 13 kills while Carly Tillotson compiled 46 assists and 17 digs for the Saints (5-5, 2-4), who lost by scores of 28-26, 24-26, 25-23, 22-25, 15-13.

Halie Baker added nine kills and 15 digs while Nicole Morgan and Haley Mercy contributed 21 and 14 digs, respectively.

The Saints had Madonna on the ropes, leading the fifth set, 12-10, but a 5-1 Madonna run sealed the hosts' victory.

SHU led in the first set, 5-1, and endured 15 ties before Madonna won the set.

In set two, the Saints endured a four-point MU run and closed with three straight points to even the match at 1-1.

In the third, Madonna enjoyed an 8-3 stretch to take command of the set.

In set four, SHU jumped to an early 6-2 lead, but the Crusaders (18-2, 6-0) chipped away and eventually evened the scored at 20-all. The Saints then finished the set with a 5-2 charge and evened the match at 2-all.

Casey Gates had 23 kills and 19 digs to lead Madonna. Spencer Stokes added 57 assists and 15 digs. Also for MU, Kayla Vogel had 12 kills while Amanda Obrycki and Payton Maxheimer finished with 23 and 21 digs, respectively.

The Saints will be in action again on Friday with a 7 p.m. WHAC match at Concordia.
