ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team opened it's 2017 season Thursday night with a victory. The Saints defeated Keiser (Fla.), 3-1.
SHU took the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-19 before Keiser won set three 25-22. The Saints finished off the Seahawks in the fourth set with a 25-16 score.
SET ONE: Siena Heights 25, Keiser 19
SHU opened scoring and never looked back. Siena Heights pulled away when they went on a 7-0 run to give them a 21-12 lead. Keiser was able to bring it back within six but the Saints held on.
SET TWO: Siena Heights 25, Keiser 19
The Saints found themselves in a 16-16 tie and went off on a 6-0 run to gain control of the set with a score of 22-17. Keiser was not able to recover and Siena Heights took set two.
SET THREE: Siena Heights 22, Keiser 25
The tables turned in set three and Keiser had control from the beginning. The Saints battled back from their largest deficit of seven with a score of 10-17 and battled back to tie the score at 18 but the Seahawks were able to pull out the set three victory.
SET FOUR: Siena Heights 25, Keiser 16
Siena Heights jumped out to a 16-9 score and coasted to the set and match victory from there.
Paige Hudgin led the Saints offense with 15 kills and also contributed 14 digs. Amanda Metz dished out 33 assists while Gabrielle Kalugar finished witha team high 16 digs. Libby Breton completed the match with seven assisted blocks.
Keiser was led by Abbie Seward with 13 kills while Faryn Salazar and Miranda Jickell each contributed 19 assists. Morgan Leff led the Seahawks with 30 digs.
Next up, the Saints will travel to Ann Arbor to compete in Concordia's Kick-Off Tournament. On Friday, Aug. 18, SHU will face off against Mt. Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) at 1 p.m. and Evangel (Mo.) at 5 p.m.
