Second Half Struggles Lead to SHU Women Loss at Madonna
LIVONIA, Mich. -- Chandler Levit (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) led the Siena Heights women's basketball team with 15 points and eight rebounds, but the Saints fell victim to a decisive second-half charge by Madonna and dropped an 80-68 decision in Saturday's Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup between teams that received votes in the latest NAIA Division II poll.
Amanda Duke (Flat Rock, Mich./Gabriel Richard) added 12 points and seven rebounds while Morgan Warfield (Hillsdale, Mich./Camden-Frontier) and Sierra Calhoun (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Grace Howrigon (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) added seven assists for SHU (9-7, 6-4).
The squads went into halftime tied at 35-all and the score remained close until a 20-4 Madonna run in the second half. The Crusaders turned a 50-49 deficit into a 69-54 advantage and led the rest of the way. Kaylee McGrath, who finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds, had 10 points during the stretch.
In the second half, Madonna (10-6, 6-3) went 12 of 21 from the field (.571) and 6 of 10 from three-point land (.600) while SHU struggled, going 8 of 27 (.296) and 2 of 7 (.286), respectively. Both teams made 15 free throws in the second.
Shantelle Herring added 19 points and seven rebounds to the Crusader effort while Rachel Melcher chipped in with 12 points.
Siena Heights will be back in action on Wednesday when Marygrove visits for a 7:30 p.m. WHAC contest.
