Women's Hoops Grabs First WHAC Win of Season

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Nikki Hughes (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) had 19 points and six rebounds, leading the Siena Heights women's basketball to an 87-55 victory over Lourdes (Ohio) in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Saturday at the SHU Fieldhouse.

Amanda Duke (Flat Rock, Mich./Gabriel Richard) added 12 points while Raina Chambers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) and Taylor Langenderfer (Lyons, Ohio/Evergreen) chipped in 10 points apiece. Grace Howrigon (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) dished six assists.

The Saints (7-2, 1-1) pulled away in the first half with a 10-point run. Hughes led the way with four points, helping the home team snag a 28-17 advantage with 5:31 to go. She finished with 15 points in the opening period.

Another SHU run -- this time, an 11-pointer -- allowed the hosts to take a commanding 54-29 lead. Once again, Hughes had four points during the streak.

For the game, SHU was 51.6 percent (33 of 64) from the field while Lourdes shot 32.7 percent (17 of 52). In the final 10 minutes, Siena Heights twice led by 34 points; the slimmest margin was 28 at 70-42.

The Gray Wolves (4-7, 0-2) were led by Precious Hands, who put in 31 points. Tarynn Hampton had a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Durr grabbed nine boards.

The Saints will play their next game on Wednesday when Davenport visits for a 7:30 p.m. WHAC tip-off.
