SHU Softball Struggles Offensively in Losses at Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Siena Heights softball team was unable to get its offense going as the Saints lost to Cornerstone, 6-0 and 12-0, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles used potent first innings to assume control in both contests. They put up a four-spot in the first game and never looked back as pitcher Heidi Warmelink pitched a four-hit shutout for the first of her two wins.

In the first of game one, Kathy DeYoung smacked an RBI double while Madison Bucilla and Rachel Doornbos had RBI singles to help Cornerstone to a 4-0 lead. The Eagles scored on a SHU error in the second and put in their last run during the sixth on an RBI groundout by Jenna Weightman.

For Siena Heights, Anna Alcorta (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) had a double while Tearra Donovan (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville), Katie O'Hotzke (New Boston, Mich./Huron) and Morgan Warfield (Hillsdale, Mich./Camden-Frontier) contributed singles.

O'Hotzke suffered the loss. Of the six runs scored against her, only two were earned. She allowed eight hits while finishing with two strikeouts and two walks.

Doornbos batted 2-for-3 for Cornerstone.

In the second contest, the Golden Eagles had two big innings -- a five-run first and a seven-run third. The first featured a two-run single by DeYoung while the third included an RBI double from Lauren Pasciak and two-run singles by Weightman and Megan Oberst.

Donovan led the Siena Heights offense, going 2-for-3. Alcorta contributed a double while Megan Higdon (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) and Jessica Lampkowski (Petersburgh, Mich./Ida) had singles.

Warmelink gave up five hits and struck out three batters for Cornerstone while Saints' pitcher Taylor Hayes suffered the loss.

Oberst and Doornbos had 2-for-3 games for the Eagles (12-22, 6-6).

The Saints (24-24, 3-7) will return to play on Sunday with a 1 p.m. WHAC doubleheader at Indiana Tech.
