BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- A total of eight Siena Heights softball players received All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honors, as announced by the league on Thursday. Three were tabbed as First Team players with one more receiving an Honorable Mention. Two seniors and two juniors were also selected to the Academic All-WHAC Team. The eighth selection was the Saints' representative on the Champions of Character Team.
The Saints' top four hitters received the All-WHAC honors. On the First Team is Anna Alcorta (Adrian, Mich./Adrian), Tearra Donovan (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville) and Katie O’Hotzke (New Boston, Mich./Huron). Brittney Rhodes (East China, Mich./Marine City) was named to the All-WHAC Honorable Mention.
Alcorta, Donovan, O’Hotzke and Rhodes were number one through four in the Saints' statistics for batting average, slugging percentage and RBIs. Alcorta led the Saints with a .394 average, .684 slugging percentage and 44 runs batted in. In all three of those categories, Donovan was ranked second, O’Hotzke third and Rhodes fourth. Alcorta led the Saints with 10 home runs, which ranks her second on the Saints' all-time single-season list.
Rhodes scored 41 runs to lead the team and while setting a new career record for runs scored. She also led the Saints in at-bats this season and set a new career mark in that category.
Jenn Sylvester (Romulus, Mich./Romulus) was honored as the Saints' Champions of Character player. In 2012, she best exemplified the five core character values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
Academically, the Saints achieved high marks. At the conclusion of the fall semester, they had a cumulative GPA of 3.42. In the spring, the Saints recognized two juniors and two seniors as having a 3.25 GPA or higher.
Senior Lizz Wilson (Jasper, Mich./Sand Creek), a child development major, was honored. while fellow senior, Rhodes, was selected as a business administration major. Juniors Tonya Berta (Ida, Mich./Ida) and Jessica Lampkowski (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) both met the standard as they major in education and chemistry, respectively.
