BABSON PARK, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team split its two contests on Wednesday, claiming a 5-4 win over Bethel (Ind.) and then dropping a 5-3 decision to Webber International (Fla.) on Webber's campus.
Joe Williams batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while winning pitcher Wes Sorenson threw 5 1/3 solid innings.
Mike Lollo (double) and Dennis Sharp Jr. added two hits each for the Saints (4-3), who scored in each of the first four innings before holding off a late charge by the Pilots. Lollo also recorded a stolen base and Drew Milligan scored two runs.
Williams and Sharp had RBI singles in the first and Lollo smacked a sacrifice fly during the second, helping SHU to a 3-0 lead.
Bethel trimmed its deficit to 3-1 before the Saints expanded their advantage on an RBI single by Sharp in the third and then an RBI double from Lollo in the fourth.
The Pilots (0-9) scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before Siena Heights reliever Ben Finn finished them off for the save.
Sorenson gave up three runs, although only one was earned, on six hits. He recorded two strikeouts and four walks. Justin McPherson worked 2/3 scoreless innings on the hill. Finn pitched the seventh.
In the loss to Webber International (11-12), Williams, Eric Henderson and Logan Curtis provided two hits apiece for the SHU offense. Travis Podolak added a double.
The Saints took an early 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Marcus Stewart in the first and an RBI single by Williams in the second.
Webber came back with three runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead before Podolak drew the Saints even at 3-all with an RBI double in the sixth.
The hosts quickly answered with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth and held that lead for good.
Kyle Burkholder was the losing pitcher for Siena. He allowed five runs -- only three earned -- on seven hits while recording one strikeout and two walks.
The Saints will return to action on Thursday with two contests in the Warner Invitational. They will take on Bellevue (Neb.) and host Warner (Fla.).
