Baseball Ends Season, Splits Another DH With Lourdes

TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Siena Heights baseball team closed out its season with a split against Lourdes (Ohio) -- a 10-9 loss in game one and then a 4-1 victory in game two -- during Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Sunday.

In the 4-1 win, pitcher Matt King worked all seven innings without allowing an earned run while Dan Muller batted 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. King surrendered five hits and recorded two strikeouts.

Drew Byers added a 2-for-3 game with two runs scored.

The Saints (17-27, 6-18) took their first lead on a Muller single in the third inning; Lourdes quickly answered in its half of the frame to forge a 1-all tie.

SHU went ahead for good with three runs in the fifth. Muller and Joe Williams had RBI singles in the inning.

Josh Redies finished the game 2-for-3 for Lourdes. Mike Calloway had a double in support of loinsg pitcher Lee Lovejoy. Lovejoy pitched five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while compiling three strikeouts and one walk. Brandon Holt worked two scoreless innings in relief.

The twinbill's opening game was a game of runs as LU scored six straight runs before SHU answered with nine of its own. The Gray Wolves (14-28, 11-20) then finished the day with four unanswered scores.

Drew Milligan led the Siena Heights offense, going 4-for-6 with three runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Dennis Sharp Jr., Mike Lollo and Austin Hauck went 3-for-5 each.

Lourdes took a 6-0 lead in the first inning before Siena Heights quickly answered with a five-run second. Milligan, Logan Curtis and Eric Henderson had RBI singles in the frame. Travis Podolak contributed a sacrifice fly.

The Saints tied the contest at 6-all on a third-inning RBI single by Alec Duncan before taking their first lead on a four-inning RBI single by Williams.

Sharp smacked an RBI single during SHU's two-run sixth as the visitors took a 9-6 lead.

Lourdes then plated one run in the sixth, two runs in the seventh, and one in walk-off fashion during the ninth. Victor Diaz, who batted 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBI, plated the winning run with a single for LU.

Also for the Wolves, Cole Fitzgerald batted 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs and one RBI. Redies went 2-for-4 while Andy Kefalos and Ryan Kovar doubled.

Travis Mielcarek manned the mound for Siena Heights, allowing seven runs on 10 hits while finishing with one strikeout and one walk. He did not get the decision; reliever Kyle Kuhr took the loss.

Sean Koerber worked two innings in rlief to earn the win for Lourdes.
