WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team split two games against New on Saturday. The Saints downed New College of Florida in game one 5-1 before falling in game two, 8-0.
SHU (1-2) will return to action on Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader. The first game will start at 9 a.m. EST vs. Bellevue, and the second will start at 12:15 p.m. EST vs. Valley City State.
Game one: Siena Heights 5, New 1
Gino Hutchinson and Nick Zito each recorded one hit and one RBI. Also recording hits for the Saints were Braxton Mustiful, Caden Gomes, Mac Melvin, and Vinny Smith with one each.
Garret Smith was the winning pitcher, going six innings allowing one earned run off four hits while forcing six strikeouts. Reliever Guy Young worked the final inning forcing one strikeout.
Landon DeVaney scored on a wild pitch to start the scoring on the day for the Saints with New tying things up at 1-1 after an RBI triple at the top of the third. Mac Melvin shortly after at the bottom of the third hit a two-RBI single to put the Saints back up 3-1. The Saints then plated twice more after Gino Hutchinson hit an RBI single in the fourth and Nick Zito hit an RBI double in the fifth.
Game two: New 8, Siena Heights 0
Justin Holton and Caden Gomes each recorded hits for the Saints.
Benjamin Weadock started on the hill. He pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits while totaling two strikeouts.
New blew the game open in the second scoring five runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead, and scored once more in the third and twice in the sixth.
