OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- After feeling the brooms Friday, the Siena Heights baseball team returned the favor against William Penn with a doubleheader sweep Saturday as the non-conference opponents split a four-game series. Individual game recaps are below.
FRIDAY
William Penn 20, Siena Heights 2
The Saints took a two-run lead before the host Statesmen answered with a 12-run third inning and an 8-run sixth.
Mac Melvin had an RBI groundout for SHU in the first. Pablo Arnaud added an RBI single in the second.
Jaozef Del Rosario and Mason Baer doubled for the offense.
Nathan Dawson worked two innings of scoreless relief on the hill, scattering three hits and two walks.
William Penn 13, Siena Heights 3
SHU again built an early lead before the WPU bats got hot.
Jack Semler and Max Baer drove in runs during a 2-run first before the Statesmen rattled off nine runs, including a 5-run fourth.
Down 9-2, the Saints scored their third run on a Melvin RBI groundout.
William Penn tacked on its final four runs in the sixth.
Baer and Braxton Mustiful had 2-for-3 games. Semler tripled and scored twice.
SATURDAY
Siena Heights 7, William Penn 3
The Saints blew the game open with a 5-run fifth to take the opener of day two.
The teams traded two-run innings in the early-going as SHU plated a pair in the first and WPU answered in the third.
In the fifth, Wyatt Burris laied down a sacrifice bunt, which the hosts misplayed into a two-run error. Baer and Pablo Arnaud tacked on RBI singles during the frame.
William Penn scored its final run in the sixth.
Owen Wright worked the first three innings on the mound for SHU and Evan Dempsey pitched a scoreless fourth for the win. Nolan Gray threw the final three innings of relief for the save.
Siena Heights 6, William Penn 5
A squeeze bunt off the bat of Del Rosario plated Burris with the game-winning run in the seventh. The Saints had overcome a 5-3 deficit with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Siena Heights took the lead with a 3-run first as Mustiful raked a two-run single before Burris plated one with a single.
The Statesmen came back with a 2-run second and 3-run fourth, taking the 5-3 edge.
Zander Zeiter had a sac fly for SHU's run in the fifth and Semler hit an RBI single to the the contest at 5-5 in the sixth.
With one out in the seventh, Burris walked and Arnaud singled Burris to third, setting the stage for Del Rosario's go-ahead bunt.
Dayton Stamper was SHU's starting pitcher and went three innings before Dayton Stamper wrapped up the final four frames for the win.
