ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team had two comeback victories to earn a sweep of WHAC opponent Defiance on Tuesday at McLaughlin Baseball Field. Individual recaps are below.
Game 1: Siena Heights 14, Defiance 13 (7 innings)
The Saints rallied for three runs in the seventh to walk off the Yellow Jackets. The game ended on a sacrifice fly by Jack Semler, who finished with six RBI.
Semler batted 3-for-4 with a homer and two doubles. He scored three runs.
Mac Melvin went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI. Jaozef Del Rosario (double) and Braxton Mustiful had two-hit games. Pablo Arnaud scored twice. Mason Mitchell and Zander Zeiter added doubles.
Pearson Mendiuk was the winning pitcher, finishing the contest off with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out two batters.
SHU faced four-run deficits four different times at 4-0, 8-4, 9-5 and 13-9 before scoring the game's final five runs.
Mitchell and Semler had RBI doubles in SHU's 4-run first. Melvin added an RBI single and Mason Baer squeezed a run in on a bunt.
Mustiful had an RBI single in the second and then the Saints tied the game at 9-all in the third with four runs. Semler delivered a two-run double and Zeiter had an RBI double in the 4-run third.
Trailing 13-9, the Saints pushed across two runs on a homer by Semler in the sixth.
That set the stage for the seventh when Del Rosario and Melvin hit RBI singles before Semler's game-ending flyout.
Game 2: Siena Heights 13, Defiance 10 (9 innings)
The Saints answered a 6-0 deficit to come back for the Game 2 win. Arnaud batted 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Semler, Melvin and Mason Baer added two-hit games. Baer scored four runs and Semler drove in two.
Zeiter scored twice and Mustiful doubled.
Nolan Gray was the winning pitcher, working two innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts and three walks.
Making his second outing of the day, Garret Smith pitched 1 1/3 of scoreless relief to earn the save. He had three strikeouts and one walk.
Down 6-0, the Saints erupted for five runs in the second with zero runs scoring on a hit. Arnaud and Aidan Grinstead were hit with pitches with the bases loaded, Mitchell and Brady Belegrin drew bases-loaded walks and Semler had a sac fly.
Semler had an RBI single in the third inning and Mustiful smacked an RBI double in SHU's 2-run fifth, pulling the Saints into a 9-8 deficit.
Siena Heights took the lead with a 3-run sixth and then tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth. Zeiter and Arnaud had RBI singles in the sixth. Justin Holton put the Saints ahead with a sac fly.
Mitchell plated two runs with a single in the eighth.
