Siena Heights head football coach Jim Lyall was named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Region 2 Coach of the Year, as announced by the American Football Coaches Association on Monday.
Lyall guided the Saints to a 6-4 record, including a 5-1 slate in Mid-States Football Association Mideast League play, as SHU Football claimed its first-ever conference championship (shared with co-champ Marian, Ind.). He was previously honored as MSFA Mideast Coach of the Year.
Lyall is one of only 25 coaches across all major collegiate divisions -- NAIA, NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III -- to be recognized as a regional coach of the year.
Thanks to his regional recognition, Lyall is now on the ballot for NAIA Coach of the Year honors along with four other NAIA coaches: Chris Oliver of Lindsay Wilson (Ky.), Brian Willmer of MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), Steve Ryan of Morningside (Iowa) and Mike Van Diest of Carroll (Mont.).
The AFCA will recognize its 25 honorees and then announce its five 2014 National Coach of the Year winners on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the 2015 AFCA Convention in Louisville, Ky.
