ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Christian Covile scored 28 points, including the go-ahead free throw, as the Siena Heights men's basketball team outlasted Concordia for a 76-73 overtime victory in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.
Covile, who went 16 of 22 from the free-throw line, also had 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Stone Beckwith added 14 points while Jerrel Martin contributed 11 points and eight rebounds for the Saints (3-5, 1-2).
With 2:01 left in OT, Covile converted 1 of 2 free throws to give SHU a 71-70 lead. Later, Covile went to the line again and made a pair of tosses with 23 seconds left. CUAA was never able to get off a game-tying 3-point attempt due to two non-shooting fouls by Siena as the Saints held on for the win.
The first half featured nine lead changes before Siena Heights took a 30-29 lead into intermission.
In the second half, the Saints used 11 straight points to build a 49-34 advantage, but Concordia had a comeback in the tank.
The Cardinals actually took the lead with 1:37 remaining in regulation when John Schaeffer buried a 3-pointer. Covile later responded for the Saints, hitting a trey with 58 seconds to go to forge the 63-all knot that warranted extra time.
CUAA took the first lead of OT on a 3-ball by Mackenzi Kurvits-Statum. SHU responded with seven consecutive points until Schaeffer hit a 3 to tie the contest at 70-70 and set the stage for Covile (4 of 6) and Beckwith (2 of 2), who combined to go 6 of 8 from the line for SHU's final six points.
Kurvits-Statum was Concordia's leading scorer with 26 points while Schaeffer contributed 25.
The Saints will return to action with a WHAC contest against Northwestern Ohio on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
