Free Throws Key in Saints' Men's Win Over Blue Devils

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team held on late to come away with 64-59 victory over Lawrence Tech in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday.

Stone Beckwith had 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench while two other Siena Heights scorers also finished in double-figures. Jerrell Martin added 14 points and Edward Cold contributed 13 points to the SHU effort. Vincent Schantz made seven rebounds for the Saints (9-15, 5-11), who went 20 of 21 from the free-throw line (95.2 percent) to hold off the Blue Devils.

As a team, SHU was 16 of 16 from the charity stripe in the second half, making 12 during the final seven-and-a-half minutes.

A 13-point Siena Heights run helped the visitors grab a first-half lead. Five different Saints contributed to the charge, including Beckwith, who had five points.

SHU took a 25-18 advantage into intermission and twice led by 12 before the Devils found their way back into the contest. A 9-2 LT stretch, including seven points by Jake Mullin, helped the Blue Devils close their deficit to 36-31 with 13:37 remaining.

During the final 10 minutes, the Blue Devils shrank their deficit to two or three points on 10 different occasions. SHU responded with points on nine of its ensuing 10 possessions; the one moment the Saints did not score, they came up with a steal to prevent a potential game-tying or go-ahead basket. Siena Heights' last 10 points were scored from the line.

Jake Mullin and Jon Harden paced the Blue Devils (4-20, 2-14) with 19 points and 16 points, respectively. Both players also added five rebounds each while Thomas Hoff dished four assists.

The Saints will be in action again on Wednesday with an 8 p.m. WHAC contest against Lourdes (Ohio).
