Men's Basketball Stunned by MVNU's Second-Half Outburst

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team opened its regular season with a 77-49 non-conference loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) on Tuesday.

Jerrell Martin was the Saints' leading scorer, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds.

Lee Gardner III and Trevor Holston added eight points each while George Goodman contributed seven rebounds.

SHU (0-1) trailed at halftime, 22-21, and eventually pulled even at 29-all in the second half before the host Cougars (4-0) went on a 13-2 run.

Mount Vernon Nazarene outscored Siena Heights, 55-28, in the second half -- highlighted by a 19-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Bryan Redic had eight of his 18 points during the 19-point streak. He also grabbed seven rebounds.

Martell Medley added 16 points, Joey Schmitz contributed 12 points and five assists, and Josh Aswill and Eric Roby chipped in with 11 points apiece. Also for the Cougars, Patrick Lucas had 10 rebounds.

MVNU shot 62.9 percent as a team in the second half (22 of 35).

The Saints will return to action on Friday and Saturday when it hosts the Maple City Classic.
