Adrian, Mich. – The Siena Heights men's basketball team begins the 2022-23 regular season at home on Thursday, November 3, in the SHU Fieldhouse, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Saints look to improve upon the final standings in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) standings from a year ago.
The Saints were chosen to finish tenth in the 2022-23 WHAC Preseason Coaches Poll released earlier in October.
LAST SEASON
Last year, Siena Heights finished 8-20 overall and 5-15 in conference play. As a result, the Saints finished ninth in the standings.
2022-23 SEASON
The men's basketball team has a 29-game season schedule set to begin at home in the Fieldhouse on Thursday. In addition, the Saints have four home games in November, five in December, four in January, and three in February for a total of 16. All home games will be streamed on the SHU Saints Team1Sports page. Links for the video feed, live stats, and tickets for these contests can be found on the team's schedule page.
Conference play begins just one game into the season on Wednesday, November 9, at Indiana Tech.
THE TEAM
The SHU men's basketball team returns multiple starters from the 2021 season, including Sophomore Max Moratinos. The Miami, Florida native saw 17 starts last season and held a 35.7 field goal percentage along with an average of 4.6 points per game. Luis Young, another Sophomore from Miami, Florida, adds to the Siena roster with his 28 games played and 3.6 points per game average. Young also holds a 35.8 field goal percentage giving SHU depth from the line. In addition, Davin Walker, a Sophomore from Detroit, Michigan, tallied 7.0 points per game with 44.7 field goal percentage returners to the Saints lineup. Siena Heights looks to fill the whole left by Kevin Rice with three top newcomers, first transfer Jalen Fisher from Lemoyne-Owen alongside incoming Freshman Colin Nutter and Jonas Tester, both out of Ohio. All three look to significantly impact the Saints' 2022-23 season.
THE COACHING STAFF
Joe Pechota enters his 11th season as the head coach of the Siena Heights men's basketball program. Pechota has a career record of 211-292 that includes his 110 wins with the Saints program. He assisted this season by graduate assistant Aaron Herbst, assistants Darius Wilson and Aaron Benard, and director of basketball operations, Ryan Mann.
