MARION, Ind. -- Siena Heights men's decathlete Holden Van Poppel sits in first place after Wednesday's day-one action at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are taking place at Indiana Wesleyan.
Van Poppel has 3,829 points -- 43 more than the second-place competitor.
Van Poppel recorded the top scores in the high jump and shot put and was second-best in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles.
Van Poppel's high jump was 6 feet, 6 1/4 inches (1.99 meters) and his shot put was 44-11 1/4 (13.70).
In the long jump, Van Poppel distanced 22-1 3/4 (6.75m). He finished the 100 in 10.97 seconds.
Van Poppel had the eighth-best time in the 400 with a 52.51. A total of 16 student-athletes are in the decathlon field.
The decathlon will wrap up Thursday with the final five stages: the 100 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500.
