SHU Men’s Volleyball Claims Three Major Individual WHAC Awards

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Siena Heights men's volleyball team claimed three major individual awards on Friday evening when the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced the 2022 men's volleyball honors.

Senior Joudiel Poveymirow claimed his second-consecutive WHAC Libero of the Year and a second-team All-WHAC honor. Fellow senior Ramon Matos earned Newcomer of the Year and a spot on the first-team All-WHAC roster. Freshman Zak Tucker earned Setter of the Year, joined Poveymirow on the second-team All-WHAC, and was on the All-Freshman squad.

Nathan Lee was on the all-academic list, while Max Moratinos was the SHU representative on the Champions of Character list.

Poveymirow finished the 2022 regular season with a league-leading 3.72 digs per set mark. The senior also leads SHU with 275 digs. He was named WHAC defender of the week once in 2022.

"Joudiel manages two jobs, has success in the classroom, and goes on to lead the conference in digs per set," said men's volleyball head coach Chris McKim. "Jo is the first Siena Heights player to win an all-conference award in consecutive years. That is very impressive."

Matos completed the 2022 regular season ranked third in the league with 4.52 kills per set. The Chicago, Illinois, transfer led SHU with 339 kills, 718 attacks, and 26 service aces. He is also fourth on the team in total blocks with 60 (5+55).

"A lot of unknowns transferring in as an upperclassman, playing a new position, learning a new system, and gelling with new teammates," said Coach McKim. "Ramon has stepped up in big ways, and we are happy for his success. I just wish we had Ramon for more than one year!"

Tucker immediately impacted the team as he began his career with a WHAC Setter of the week award. An honor, the freshman from Chesapeake, Virginia, won three times this season. He was also named the NAIA Setter of the week once. Tucker ranks second in the conference with 9.96 assists per set.

"I do not think anyone would guess Zak is a freshman. He brings great size and athleticism to the net while playing with poise. The best thing about Zak is that we are just getting started with his development and expect him to get even better!" said McKim.
