Hayes Delivers Game-Winner, Earns Win in Softball's Split with Aquinas

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Taylor Hayes smashed a game-winning walk-off double to end the day as the Siena Heights softball team split a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Christensen Memorial Field.

Hayes, who earned the win in the pitcher's circle, smacked a one-out RBI double to plate pinch-runner Ashley O'Leary.

The Saints (16-16, 7-7), who had tied the contest at 1-all on a solo homer by Katie O'Hotzke, snapped a nine-game losing streak. Kenya Keller added a double for the home team.

Hayes pitched eight innings and allowed six hits. The lone Aquinas run was unearned. Hayes also compiled five strikeouts and three walks.

Aquinas scored its only run in the first inning. it was led by Kala Foerster and Lexi Popma, who both went 2-for-3.

Caitlyn Hensel was the losing pitcher. She gave up two runs on five hits while recording 11 strikeouts and three walks.

In game one, SHU led 4-3 before Aquinas plated nine unanswered runs.

Mariah Boss (triple) went 2-for-3 with two runs while Keller added a three-run triple.

Keller's three-bagger came in the first inning. Aquinas evened the score at 3-all before an O'Hotzke single in the second gave SHU its final advantage at 4-3.

After that, the visitors scored six times in the fourth and three more times in the fifth.

Aquinas had four different players with three hits: Popma (two runs), Irma Cruz (four RBI), Olivia Hrymak (run) and Ellie Adams (run, two RBI). Jenn Woolard also homered and drove in four runs.

Rebecca Shineldecker was the winning pitcher for Aquinas while O'Hotzke suffered the loss.

Siena Heights will return to action on Saturday with a WHAC doubleheader at Michigan-Dearborn.
