TUCSON, Ariz. -- Taylor Hayes and Megan Jones combined for three extra-base hits and five RBI to lift the Siena Heights softball team to a 5-4 victory over Northwestern (Iowa) at the Tucson Invitational Games on Monday.
Jones batted 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. She drove in the go-ahead run.
Hayes went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Kelsie Abbott and Mariah Boss scored two runs apiece.
Abbott was the winning pitcher, scattering 10 hits and allowing only two earned runs. In seven innings of work, she recorded six strikeouts and three walks.
The Saints fell behind in the first inning, 2-0, before striking back in the bottom half of the frame on Hayes's two-run home run.
Jones smacked a two-run double in the SHU third, but Northwestern answered with two runs in its fourth inning.
Jones gave the Saints the lead for good on a fifth-inning RBI double, but Abbott needed to escape a seventh-inning jam to preserve the win.
With one out and runners on second and third, Abbott struck one batter out and then finished the game on a foulout.
Jill Kleinhesselink batted 3-for-4 with a triple, double, run and RBI for Northwestern. Kourtni Robinson and Kara Nonnemacher added two hits apiece while Clare Ipema stole four bases.
The Saints (3-0) will return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Northwestern.
