Softball Splits Twinbill

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Siena Heights softball team split a doubleheader with Northwestern (Iowa) on Tuesday, losing 9-0 before winning 6-4, at the Tucson Invitational Games.

Kelsie Abbott batted 3-for-4 with two runs while earning the win in the nightcap. Hannah Bleikamp added a 2-for-4 game with one double, Mariah Boss scored two runs and Tiffany Jones doubled for the Saints (4-1).

Abbott went the distance in the circle, allowing one earned run and seven hits. She recorded eight strikeouts and two walks.

Falling behind after Northwestern scored single runs in the second and fourth innings, the Saints came back with three runs in both the fifth and sixth frames.

A wild pitch and Northwestern error helped the Saints tie the contest at 2-all in the fifth before Jones ripped an RBI double to give SHU the lead.

In the sixth, the Saints scored another run-aided error. Megan Jones then ripped a two-run single to extend the Siena Heights lead ot 6-2.

Northwestern began to chip away at the SHU lead, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth, but that was as close as the Red Raiders would get.

Monserrat Figueroa (double, two RBI) and Kara Nonnemacher (two runs) had two hits apiece for Northwestern. Clare Ipena added two RBI in support of losing pitcher Kayla Tindall.

Tindall allowed three earned runs on nine hits while recording six strikeouts and two walks.

The Saints did not have any hits in the day's opener, which ended after five innings. Stephanie Tylicki was the losing pitcher, giving up four earned runs on six hits. She walked three batters.

Morgan Means was the winner for Northwestern. She had six strikeouts and two walks.

Laura Hurley tripled, doubled and drove in two runs for the Raders. Jensen Boger and Jessica Rayela contributed doubles.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday with contests against Morningside (Iowa) and Great Falls (Mont.).
