Queen of the Vault: Stewart Wins NAIA Indoor Crown

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Siena Heights women's pole vaulter Emma Stewart won the national championship on Thursday during day-one action at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center.

Stewart entered the event as the No. 1 seed and held her position, winning the overall event via tiebreaker. Stewart tied two other vaulters -- Gabrielle Zeilenga of Bethel (Ind.) and Emerson Vanscoy of Midway -- at 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3 1/2 inches). The tiebreaker had seven misses for Stewart and eight for the other two, handing Stewart the gold.

Stewart's sister Kathryn Stewart also competed at Nationals, tying for 20th with a height of 3.40m (11-1 3/4).

The SHU women will continue at NAIAs with Bailey McCulloch in the 600-meter run on Friday and a trio for Saturday: high jumpers Emma Valentine and Morgan Lutton and 5,000 runner Savannah Richmond.
