Saints Improve to 9-3 in WHAC Play With 3-1 Win Over Gray Wolves

SYLVANIA, Ohio -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team won three straight sets to push past Lourdes 3-1 in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) match on Wednesday night inside the Ebeid Rec Center. The Saints (14-4, 9-3 WHAC) improve their league mark to 9-3 with the victory and sit in the second spot in the conference standings.

Kadie Carsten led the Saints with a double-double on the evening with 13 kills (.250) and 14 digs. Aline Marinelo had a team-high 14 kills (.400) in the winning effort. Autumn Anderson and Janel Ruhlman finished the match with nine kills each. Aubrey Bates also had a double-double with 46 assists and 16 digs--her ninth of the year. Reigning WHAC defensive player of the week, Payton Osborne led the Saints back row with 28 digs to make three Saints with double-digit digs on the day.

Siena Heights responded to a 4-0 run by the Gray Wolves with a 4-0 run of their own to take the lead 17-16 in the first set. Lourdes then scored nine of the final 10 points to secure a 1-0 lead after a 25-18 win in the opening game.

A 6-0 run by the Saints gave the visitors a 13-9 lead before building an 18-10 lead with another run of five points that forced a Lourdes timeout. SHU maintained the eight-point edge to a 22-14 lead before the Gray Wolves rallied with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to three points (22-19). The Saints shut the door with three of the following four points to knot the set score up at one game each. 

Lourdes used a run of five to take a slim 11-10 lead in the third before the Saints recaptured the lead, 16-14. The lead grew to 20-15. The Gray Wolves came within two points, 20-18, but SHU pulled away from that point to grab a 25-19 win and take the 2-1 lead. 

The fourth set saw the home team take a 16-10 lead before the Saints battled back to tie the score at 18 before taking a one-point lead (19-18) and never surrendering it through the end of the set to take the match, 25-21.
